Kyoto is often thought of for its grandeur, history, and tradition. However, it also has a free all-you-can-eat cafe!
Cha-Gan Ju is located in the well known tourist area around Uji Station. Its name comes from the Okinawan dialect and means, “always having vitality”. The cafe offers food and drinks made with ingredients sourced in Okinawa and Kyoto. Each treat is perfect for giving as a gift or for keeping as a souvenir.
The tasting area offers more than 100 different desserts, salads, breads, and even coffee and tea. You can enjoy all of them to your heart’s content. The store even has its own seating area where you can savor each and every bite, which makes you worry about Cha-Gan Ju’s business model. Yet, according to the clerk, almost every customer buys local products when they leave, so the business model must be working. It’s great to see a store that is so confident in its products; it makes one want to go and try them.

You also have to taste the crepes from the store’s paying menu! Usually crepes are overly sweet, but at Cha-Gan Ju they come with fresh, local vegetables and a miso sauce made from roasted tea, green tea, and sesame seeds. Just one bite and you’ll be hooked! If you love vegetarian food this is a meal you can not miss. If you are ever in Uji make sure you take the chance to visit Cha-Gan Ju.Address: 66-1, Uziichiban, Uji, Uji-shi, Kyoto, 611-0021, Japan
